Fighting Toxic Mold

Fungi in Homes May Cause Cough, Sinusitis, Headaches, Fatigue, Death

Toxic mold is a serious health risk. Molds such as Aspergillus, Stachybotrys and Cladosporium are extremely toxic and hard to remove from homes.

Thousands of species of mold live in our homes and immediate environment, and certain moulds or fungi can be extremely hazardous to our health – causing respiratory symptoms, headaches, problems with the immune system, central nervous system, vision, memory, and even death.

What is Mold?

Mold, mould, or fungi are decomposers that reproduce with spores. Molds have existed for 10,000 times as long as humans: Fossil records indicate that human life began 80-100,000 years ago, but mold was here over a billion years ago.

Molds are pervasive and often overlooked. They live in our bathrooms (showers, bathtub), back yard, on trees and moist ground in parks, and on the inside and outside of buildings.

It may be hard to imagine that something that grows just about everywhere can be very dangerous. In fact, molds are used to produce foods (e.g. cheese, tempeh, soy sauce) as well as medicinal and therapeutic ingredients such as penicillin and cholesterol-lowering drugs. Yet one square inch of mold infestation can produce over a million spores, and many people suffer from symptoms and health conditions that are aggravated by mold spores.

Three types of mold in particular produce spores and toxins, called "mycotoxins", that are especially dangerous to human health.

What is Toxic Mold?

"Toxic mold" is a term used to refer to molds of the genuses Aspergillus, Stachybotrys, and Cladosporium that have been found in infestations in homes and buildings and have caused serious health problems. These molds, most commonly Stachybotrys chartarum, cause problems ranging from respiratory problems to kidney failure, and may be lethal.

  • Toxic mold is a factor in "sick building syndrome" usually associated with office buildings.
  • Some people are more affected by mold than others; some are allergic to inhaling mold spores of any kind.
  • In the last decade, the number of toxic mold infestations in homes has been on the rise.
  • A study by the Harvard University School of Public Health examined homes in Canada and the U.S. and found that half of homes had leaks (e.g. roof, window, structural) or water damage resulting in mold growth that caused a 50-100% increase in respiratory problems for people living in those homes.
  • A Mayo Clinic study found that most cases of chronic sinusitis and infections were due to fungal infections growing in the sinuses: "Research has shown that chronic sinusitis, a condition that affects 37 million people in the United States, is caused by an immune response to fungus."
  • Only about 20% of molds are toxic, but they are also very difficult to kill: bleach and industrial chemicals do not work on these molds.

How Do You Kill Toxic Mold?

Despite the ineffectiveness of bleach and other industrial chemicals, natural solutions have been found that work against toxic mold. An essential oil blend of clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus, lemon and rosemary has been shown to stop the spread of toxic mold and kill mold growing in infested homes.

According to Edward Close, Ph.D., the oil blend, called "Thieves," works where more conventional responses to mold simply don't. Essential oils such as cinnamon and clove have been used historically, and researched in the modern day, to have antiseptic, antibacterial, and antifungal properties.

10 Steps to Prevent and Eliminate Toxic Mold

If you do not have mold - PREVENT MOLD Diffuse the blend of essential oils shown in this video for

15 minutes every 3 hours, or you may instead diffuse for 8 hours, non-stop, once a week.

If you have mold -- Eliminate MOLD AND KEEP IT FROM COMING BACK

1. Sampling – you may want to contact a professional to have sampling done to determine the type of

mold, and whether it is toxic or not. Toxic mold must be dealt with differently than non-toxic mold.

2. Diffuse - After samples have been collected, then diffuse the Essential Oil Blend for 24-72 hours, nonstop, in the space(s) where mold was found. One (1) recommended cold-air diffuser works well in spaces up to 1000 sq. ft. in size. If possible, and for best results, leave the room closed and sealed during this intensive diffusing. This will allow maximum penetration and absorption of the essential oil blend.

3. Repair Leaks - Repair all leaks and eliminate all sources of moisture.

4. Clean Thoroughly - If sampling identifies NO toxic mold, then after diffusing has been

completed, clean visible mold and stains with the recommended Household Cleaner, undiluted. Use

protective equipment and take precautions to avoid contact with and breathing mold spores while cleaning.

5. If sampling identifies Toxic Mold, then contact a professional mold remediation service to have

infested materials removed and properly disposed.

6. Resample - Have your professional resample to be sure all sources of mold have been identified and

remediated.

7. Repeat - If necessary, repeat steps 1 through 6, above.

8. Remove - Remove mold infested materials, seal in plastic and properly dispose. If you do NOT have

toxic mold, you may dispose sealed materials in your garbage.

9. Repair, Replace, Refinish all affected areas.

10. Diffuse Regularly for prevention and protection.

Thieves Blend Kills Toxic Mold

Safe, Natural Essential Oil Fungicide Works Where Bleach Doesn't

Effective — Non-Toxic — Organic
100% Natural — Safe for Humans and Pets

Blend of cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, lemon & rosemary essential oils known as an immune system booster is a natural antibacterial, antifungal agent that kills toxic mold.

Toxic mold is a serious concern to many homeowners and allergy sufferers. Mold spores worsen most respiratory and other health symptoms, and toxic mold from certain species can infest buildings, causing anything from headaches and sinus trouble to memory loss and death. One natural approach outshines medical and industrial cleaners at removing toxic mold: a blend of essential oils known as "Thieves," containing the oils of cinnamon, clove, rosemary, lemon and eucalyptus.

Bleach, Ozone, Hospital Detergents, Industrial Cleaners Don't Work on Toxic Mold. These chemicals typically used for treating mold are ineffective and are hazardous to your health. — US EPA and the American Industrial Hygiene Association.

In the past, even the EPA suggested washing areas with bleach to kill mold. It is now known that this doesn't work: the EPA and the American Industrial Hygiene Association do not recommend using common chemicals to kill toxic mold.

The only effective way to fight toxic mold, according to most experts, is to remove all materials covered in mold growth and rebuild the house – expensive renovations that can require replacing entire walls of buildings – and keep moisture levels in homes low.

Why is Mold a Major Health Concern?

1 in 7 Americans suffers from acute fungal sinusitis, resulting from exposure to mold. — Mayo Clinic

Molds are toxins, and some research has indicated that these toxins can affect the nervous system or the immune system or impede the function of the frontal cortex, the part of the brain that plays a part in impulse control, memory, problem solving, sexual behavior, socialization and spontaneity.

Mold is an allergen for many people, contributing to allergies, runny nose and other sinus problems, and headaches. But certain kinds of mold produce toxins that are dangerous for almost everyone. Some of the symptoms linked to household exposure to these molds include:

·         allergies, asthma, sore throats, colds, sinusitis

·         cancer

·         dandruff

·         hives, itching and dermatitis

·         fatigue

·         memory and learning problems

·         vision problems

·         headaches

·         hair loss

·         hives

·         verbal dysfunction

·         vertigo, tremors

·         diarrhea

·         central nervous dysfunction

·         seizures

·         vomiting

·         kidney failure

·         death

What is Thieves Blend?

Young Living's Thieves™ essential oil blend was created based on the historical account of four thieves in France who protected themselves from the black plague with cloves, rosemary and other aromatics while robbing victims of the killer disease. When captured, they were offered a lighter sentence in exchange for their secret recipe. In modern days, these same herbs and essential oils have been found to be an effective barrier against topical and airborne microorganisms.

"Thieves" is a blend of the essential oils of clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus, lemon and rosemary, based on the spices and aromatic oils used by thieves in 15th-century Marseilles during the Bubonic plague to keep from contracting the disease from the dead bodies they robbed.

Several varients of the recipe were recorded in the British archives after the French monarchy managed to catch some of the thieves, where it was rediscovered by D. Gary Young.

The blend contains antibacterial and antiviral oils known to support immune health and fight pathogens like bacteria and fungi. Thieves is made from therapeutic-grade oils, and is safe to inhale or to use internally or directly on skin (although it is a "hot" oil and should be used cautiously on sensitive skin).

It has been scientifically tested to kill 99.96% of certain airborne bacteria, and is proving to be one of the few treatments effective at killing toxic mold.

Thieves Oil versus Toxic Mold

Dr. Edward Close has been called in on several cases where households were quarantined for toxic mold that had not responded to bleach, hospital cleansers, or industrial strength chemicals.

When these homes were treated for 24 to 48 hours with Thieves blend, tests found low levels of mold spores (a fraction of what had been present) and these levels continue to drop to virtually nothing in the next few weeks.

This is almost unheard of in a mold treatment – molds usually begin to grow as soon as bleach and other chemicals are removed. What's more, Thieves is good for the immune system, unlike bleach and other chemicals which are toxic themselves. It may be used preventatively and to treat mold-related symptoms.

The mold was treated with Thieves using a cold-air essential oil diffuser which does not damage the antifungal properties of the oils.

Thieves Mold Kit - What you’ll need to get started
  •  1 bottle of Young Living Thieves Essential Oil Blend (for diffusing) Each 15 ml bottle of   Thieves essential oil is sufficient for about 1,000 square feet of space.
  •  1 bottle of Inner Defense – 30 Softgels (internal use)
  •  1 bottle Young Living Thieves Household Cleaner (for clean-up after diffusing)
  •  1 Cold Air Diffuser (to diffuse and get the essential oil into the air to kill mold spores)

How to Use Thieves Essential Oil Blend

  1.               Diffusing
  2.               Direct Body Application
  3.               Ingestion

Cold-Air Diffuser

Diffuse for 15 to 20 minutes every 3 to 4 hours.
Diffusing is one of the most effective ways to experience the many effects of essential oils.

The easiest and simplest way of putting essential oils into the air for inhalation is to use an aromatic diffuser. A cold air diffuser uses room-temperature air to blow oil up against some kind of nebulizer.

This breaks the oils up into a micro-fine mist that is then dispersed into the air. The oils, with their oxygenating molecules, will then remain suspended for several hours to freshen and improve the quality of the air. The anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and antiseptic properties of the oils kill bacteria and help reduce fungus and mold. Essential oils, when diffused, have been found to reduce the amount of airborne chemicals, as well as help to create greater spiritual, physical, and emotional harmony.

Recommended Diffusing Time While a diffusers can run continuously until it is out of oil, the greatest therapeutic benefit is received by diffusing oils for only 15 minutes out of an hour so that the olfactory system has time to recover before receiving more oils. This also helps to conserve your oils. A simple way to do this is to use a programmable timer that can automatically turn on your diffuser each hour for 15 minutes.

Oils for Air Purification Diffusing essential oils in the home or work place is one of the best ways to purify our environment. Cinnamon bark, mountain savory, oregano, and Thieves (a blend by Young Living Essential Oils), were all tested by Weber State University and were shown to kill 100% of the airborne bacteria present when diffused into the atmosphere.

Direct Body Application
If you are planning to use essential oils directly to the skin, it is a good idea to test a small patch of skin first to be sure there is no reaction. It is important to apply essential oils to the most beneficial areas of the body. If you have a headache for instance, a good place to apply the oil would be a corresponding pressure point or reflexology point to the head, but for those who are not familiar with either acupressure or reflexology, there is an easier way. Apply the oil directly to your feet.

Many people believe the oil should be applied to the soles of the feet only but, others recommend applying essential oil to the whole foot to include the reflexes on the top of the foot as well.

Diluting oils

Because essential oils penetrate your skin rapidly, you should look for a carrier oil that is also easily absorbed such as Young Living's V-6 Oil.

Where to apply

Dilute 1 part  Thieves Oil to 4 parts V-6 oil.
Caution: Possible sun/skin sensitivity. If it feels too "hot" on the skin, apply lavender oil to reduce the "heat".

  • Apply to the bottom of the feet, throat, stomach, or abdomen. It is safest when applied to the bottom of the feet, as it may be caustic to the skin.
  • Dilute w/V-6 and Massage over thymus.
  • For headaches put 1 drop on tongue and push against roof of mouth.
  • Dilute w/V-6 or use "NEAT" (Direct to skin, no dilution - be careful!) for body massage.
  • Put 4-8 drops on cotton ball and locate on vents.
